Embracing Our Best Selves: Recognizing Sabotaging Behaviors

We all strive for the best in our lives—whether it’s achieving our dream job, cultivating a healthy lifestyle, or fostering meaningful relationships. However, the journey to our ideal selves often faces obstacles not from external factors, but from within. Personal behaviors, habits, and choices can sometimes be the biggest barriers. Recognizing and addressing these self-sabotaging tendencies is crucial for personal growth.

Having An Honest Inner Dialogue

Change begins with recognizing the behaviors that hinder our goals. Sometimes it’s struggling to wake up early and constantly hitting the snooze button. At other times, it’s wanting to rest but overloading our schedules. These small, unproductive habits accumulate and become significant stressors. By having self-awareness, discipline, and leveraging the right support system, you can mitigate these stressors.

The Fear of Success

A crucial question to ask yourself is, “What is causing me to self-sabotage despite wanting to succeed?” Often, the fear of success can be more daunting than the fear of failure or not trying at all. Success introduces unknowns that can be terrifying. To uncover the roots of negative habits, start by journaling your thoughts. Reflect on whether the avoidance is due to fear of success or a genuine lack of interest. This introspection can open up a new and clear path forward.

Course-Correcting from Self-Sabotage

Once you recognize your behaviors and the motivations behind them, you can refocus your goals and create realistic goals. Here are a few strategies to push through and overcome self-sabotaging habits:
  •  Establish a Reward System: Treat yourself to snacks, gifts, or rest breaks after achieving your goals. These rewards can motivate you to push past self-sabotaging instincts by celebrating even the smallest of wins.
  • Set a Timer or Deadline: Creating a sense of urgency by setting timers or deadlines helps eliminate procrastination and fosters productivity.
  • Find an Accountability Buddy: Sharing your goals with someone else can significantly enhance your ability to resist self-sabotage. An accountability buddy can provide support, enforce check-ins, and offer valuable assistance.

Avoiding self-sabotage often requires reaching out for help and building a supportive network. Self-isolation can exacerbate these tendencies, but with the support of family and friends, it can be easier to stay on track. Communicate with those closest to you the ways you are changing certain behaviors and ask them to check in to hold you accountable.
